Godmother’s Speech
“Dear Gerhard, dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am honored and delighted to have been asked to perform the christening of this beautiful sailing boat.
Before I proceed I would like to give a short explanation of the meaning of the name which this boat shall receive.
In Greek mythology, the so called “Anemoi” were wind gods who were each ascribed a cardinal direction from which their respective winds came, and were each associated with various seasons and weather conditions.
- Boreas was the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter.
- Notus was the Greek god of the south wind. He was associated with the desiccating hot wind that was thought to bring the storms of late summer and autumn and was feared as a crop destroyer.
- Eurus was the Greek god representing the unlucky east wind thought to bring warmth and rain.
- Zephyrus is the Greek god of the west wind. The gentlest of the winds, Zephyrus is known as the fructifying wind, the messenger of spring.
And the Italian version of Zephyrus is ZEFIRO.
The moods of the sea are many, from tranquil to violent. We ask that this ship be given the strength to carry on. That her keel is strong and that she keeps out the pressures of the sea.
Today we come to name this lady ZEFIRO and send her to sea to be cared for and to care for the people who sail her. We ask the sailors of old and the mood of god that is the sea to accept ZEFIRO as her name, to help her through the passages, and allow her to return with her crew safely.
TO THE SEA… TO HER SAILORS… TO ZEFIRO!”

The Atlantic crossing was also the real start to our circumnavigation.
